Useful Information

Medical Care:

In case of a medical emergency, please call 119. However, for the year of 2017/2018, the doctor on the island, Masa-San, speaks fluent English, and can be reached on 08052947779. It is best to call him first, as the emergency services (based off island), may not speak English.

The beauty of the Iheya is its quiet, but this also means that you will often be in places which are isolated and not close to other people. Please take care while traveling around the island!

Be wary while walking through long grasses at night, as this is when Habu (highly venomous snakes, indigenous to the island) are most active. Keep an eye out for jellyfish and sea snakes as well, as both of these are dangerous. However, during 3 weeks here, I have yet to see either of these. Like any more exotic location, Iheya has its own things to be cautious about, but these are not a huge concern if one is careful.

Village information:

There is one ATM on the island, which is located next to the village office. It is open from 8:30-17:00. Please note, card payments are not accepted in most of the island's shops or izakayas, so it is very important to have cash.

While the house doesn't have wifi, free and unlimited wifi is available at the port at all hours of the day, every day of the week. The building itself closes at 17:00 on Sundays, and 18:00 on other days of the week, but it is possible to access the wifi from just outside the building.

There are two main shops from which to buy household goods and groceries. The first is JA (next to the ATM) and is closed on Sundays. It shuts at 19:00 every evening.

The second is listed as a "home goods" store, but is a smaller grocery store only two minutes from the house. It is open every day and closes at 21:00.

Both shops offer fresh and homemade bento boxes and onigiri every day.

There is also an exceptional shop selling fresh sashimi for very low prices. It is called 上原鮮魚店 and serves large and very fresh portions of take-home sashimi for about ~‎¥600.
