The Beaches

Iheya's beaches are spectacular in their diversity. The entire island is surrounded by an impressive reef which does make proper swimming difficult at low tide, however, the sheer beauty of the island's beaches make up for this small slight. From pebble strewn stretches, studded with imposing rocks, to swathes of finely sifted, white sand bordered with impossibly clear, azure waters, each and every beach has its own character and atmosphere.
The western side of the island is easily accessible and only a short 15 minute journey by bike on a road which cuts through rippling rice fields fringed with the island's trademark mountains.

For those who feel like a slightly lazier day, there is a beautiful beach as soon as you reach the west side of the island.

As you reach the west coast, turn right.

Almost immediately on your left, is the dragonfly clouded entrance to the beach.

This beach has soft white sand and, importantly, convenient sandy gaps in the reef in which you can fully immerse yourself in the water, even at the lowest of tides.

If you walk a little further north on the beach, the finer sand gives way to a coarser sand and rocks.

This beach is also perfect to view the sunset from, as its proximity to the house makes it easy to get home from after.

If you feel up to a bit more of a journey, head south along the coastal road for another 20-25 minutes. Further south lies a gorgeous, wider stretch of sand, with a tiny entrance that one has to keep a sharp eye out for.

These are just two examples of the beaches on the west side. However, the beauty of this island is the ability one has to discover hidden places of their own. While biking along the coastal road, just keep an eye out for telltale gaps in fences or greenery, as each of these gaps could lead to an empty paradise of your own making.

For beaches with more of a chance to swim, head towards the island's most southern tip, next to the Noho Island bridge. Though the water is still very shallow at low tide, one can wade out in a reef free area. This wide beach also offers a great view of the Noho Island bridge, and the island itself. At about 35 mins by bike, it is a little bit of a longer ride, but well worth it for gorgeous views and the opportunity to swim-however, be careful of the boats which operate here due to the absence of a reef!
